About the combined MMR and varicella vaccine (MMRV), ACIP has just voted to *not* recommend MMRV before the age of 4 years.

This will not change access to MMR and varicella separately.

For the scientists and docs: shingles / herpes zoster is the disease, the virus is varicella zoster virus, which is a herpesvirus

A new Nature Medicine study analyzing health records from >100 million people in the US offers compelling evidence that reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) ,the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles may contribute to dementia risk.

Second dose of the vaccine to prevent horrendous varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation (aka shingles) is in my arm.

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford University have found that getting vaccinated against shingles- a painful and debilitating condition that can flare up years after infection from varicella zoster virus- not only LOWERS the risk of infection, but can also PROTECT against dementia. 🧪🧵⬇️

This means they are going to restrict access to the MMRV, based on MMR + varicella being available as alternatives.

But they’ll come after MMR and varicella next

Evidence suggests reactivations of the varicella-zoster virus may accelerate aging and raise dementia risk. Now scientists want to know if vaccines and antivirals could help protect the brain.

To be very clear:

ACIP is still recommending BOTH the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and Varicella (chickenpox) vaccines, just not the combined MMRV shot.

This is due to a reported increased risk of febrile seizures from the MMRV compared to when the MMR and Varicella are administered as two shots.

RFK Jr.’s handpicked vaccine council voted to stop recommending a combination vaccine for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella, in what “seems to be an agenda of Kennedy’s own design,” Katherine J. Wu and Tom Bartlett report:
