you could probably go pretty far with a combination of mckenize wark's vectoralist thesis and the housing theory of everything – why do knowledge workers stick around these abusive institutions when the internet is supposed to provide Exit? well its because making it on your own is too risky
the answer is that the bosses continue to revolt against the politics of the public.

2 columns a week is frankly not that much of a workload unless you're putting a LOT of reporting and research into them. I used to write 5 a week, easily. why pay someone (I'd guess) well into 6 figures and not get your money's worth?

McKenzie Wark talked about the "vectoralist" class in A Hacker Manifesto in 2004, which pretty much match your description.

Is Bottleneck Capitalism a legitimate term? Where it’s not as much about what goods or services are produced but how one controls the flow of goods and services? More parasitic than productive? The Oligarchs of today seem to have gathered their billions this way, not by solving problems or creating.

It’s like young people today read a tweet that mentioned luddism and threw away the actual reasoning behind the movement and just grasped onto “TECHNOLOGY BAD.” Like i get it, the vectoralist class has created a hellscape. But the hellscape is an economic construct! Not a technology!!
