rather the Venetic alphabet, borrowed from & closely related to the north Etruscan alphabet, but with punctuation and additional signs to represent sounds present in Venetic (an Indo-European language) but not in Etruscan. This is a (4th-2nd c. BCE) votive model of a school exercise tablet... (1/5)🏺

Enjoyed this example of Venetic in the Padua Museum, especially the archaic shapes of its letters.

You can see how the old shape of the letter pi in "pupone" (first and third letters from the top right) could easily become either Greek Π or Latin P.

'Self' is an English word with cognates across the Germanic languages: Danish selv, Dutch zelf, German selbst, Swedish själv, and silba in Gothic.

Beyond Germanic, its origin is uncertain, but intriguingly "sselboi-sselboi" ('for himself') turns up in the ancient Venetic language of northern Italy.

A distant cognate? Or even a borrowing? Weiss (2022) entertains the second theory:

"It should be noted that the Venetic form occurs on one of the latest Venetic inscriptions ... It’s possible that this is the result of a quite recent and perhaps one-off borrowing from Germanic."

A votive Venetic writing tablet with lists of vowels, consonants and pairs of consonants plus a votive inscription from Este. Venetic was inscribed between 6th and 1st centuries BC in northern Italy. This tablet dates to the second half of the first century BC. #EpigraphyTuesday

🏛 An exceptional cultic site active in both the pre-Roman and Roman eras has been unearthed in Ponso, Italy, during investigations in advance of a new road.

Discoveries include temples and carved stones with inscriptions in the local Venetic language.

A hoard find of early silver coins with possibly Celtic or Venetic names, partly in Venetic script. Some of them bear the legend COppOV in a mix of Latin letters (here in capitals) and North-Italic P (here in minuscule).
I mentioned these coin legends briefly in: www.academia.edu/19947321/Neu...

The shape of some letters may resemble the form of letters from the ancient alphabets of northern Italy (Raetic, Venetic), but there are no systematic correspondences, and there are other very different signs.
