Why would V/Line train services be affected by a Telstra mobile and data network outage? Because V/Line uses the Telstra 4g network for “Regional Rail Communications Network (RRCN), which allows V/Line train controller to train driver radio communications”.

I find comparison with Australia quite fascinating because they’re similarly suburbanized and car oriented. Most Australian freight railways are private now but operate on track owned by the Commonwealth (ARTC) or state governments (QR, VicTrack, TAHE)

VicTrack owns the track in Victoria while VLine does intercity and MTM is contracted to do suburban. The Public Transport Authority owns the track in Western Australia with TransPerth doing suburban trains and TransWA intercity trains. Queensland rail owns track and runs passenger trains for QLD.
