also re: pragerU artificially inflating their viewcounts-- one of the benefits of that is that it makes their channel more valuable to... advertisers. they make more money off ads because their videos are easier to monetize bc they have high viewcounts bc they buy ads. parasitic all the way down.

YouTube updated how they count views again.
As soon as a video starts they now count that as a view which in the public view will make it look like everyone’s videos are doing “better”, but it’s really just YouTube inflating their viewcounts for advertisers.
Just a data nightmare for rest of us.

it's nuts how obviously botted the viewcounts are on rumble. one of russell brand's most recent streams apparently got 150K+ views (almost 4x what he usually gets on youtube) with 300 likes, which is roughly what I'd see on a video with 5000 views

I forget who, but years ago someone once referred to my Atari videos as the "Velvet Underground" of historical retrospectives in that they didn't get massive viewcounts but were influencing how other people considered their approaches and perspectives

I was talking about this with some other art folks last night- a cool thing about having YouTube as a side gig is I'm free to experiment and make whatever type of videos I want. I'm not beholden to the algorithm bc I don't have to worry about viewcounts paying my bills. So I can mess around a bit :>

the embarrassing thing about youtube's change to the viewcounts is that new videos are going to very quickly hit the "wow it's your most popular thing ever" threshhold for a bit, but then days later, the old (actual) hits are surpassing your paltry upload even when it has pumped up numbers

I have a lot of reasons to believe twitter is inflating viewcounts and creating fake likes to trick a hemorrhaging userbase, but the fact that they are updating their entire app to function more like bluesky in terms of images and feed just gives the game away doesnt it

i remember when they first rolled out the viewcounts on tweets, i had a locked private account with about 20 followers at the time, i had tweets that had hundreds of views, which would be logically impossible
