i don't know exactly why this happens, but i find it fascinating that sometimes low quality digital images have a sort of inverse vignetting along harsh edges which exaggerates contrast. it's very compelling.

Strange New Worlds is a really lavish show, but between the pointless cinematic aspect ratio, the heavy vignetting, edge blurring and overly dark colour correction, they just crush all the detail. Basically, there's an oval in the middle of the shot that's actually in focus, but otherwise it's mush.

VHS/UHF distortion and vignetting for indie games has gotten to be so goddamn hack.
That's not how it looked, and if your game looked half that fucked up back in the day you'd spend hours adjusting your antenna until you could see WTF you're doing.

It's shot on 4x5 if you're asking the film size? The lens seems to be ~150mm or so. Probably was meant for a cabinet card sort of size plate, so some vignetting but nothing crazy

Well @philstrachan.bsky.social has had some lovely results from XP2 at 80 so I'm comfortable just flinging it at whatever conditions we'll have this weekend. My Holga doesn't have the craziest vignetting so I'm considering the economy of 16 shots versus 12.

Thanks! I struggled a bit with getting the lamppost to look like it wasn't pasted in. It helped to reduce the brightness of the post a bit, not to sharpen the image a lot (which affected only the lamppost because it was in focus), and to add a bit of vignetting to pull the center of attention in.

It's great. I'm 3 rolls in and have had no problems. You can also use aps-c size lenses and there doesn't seem to be vignetting.

It’s fairly recent, but viltrox as a brand makes the optical compromise of more vignetting rather than pushing for fractions of a stop more speed. The result is wild CA performance and insane resolving power. I have their 28/4.5 and 50/2, and both are absolutely lovely.
