For some strange reason, we never saw any sunbathers lounging on the beaches in #Iceland. Maybe they just don't like black sand. 😉

At Víkurfjara, a black sand beach, this part of the beach sported many large rocks and even larger boulders, some of which were topped by moss. The rugged shoreline was buffeted by waves and the day was foggy/overcast. Since all the sand we saw in Iceland was black, I decided the identification 'black sand beach' meant that some portion of the beach was not covered in rocks. Along the Lóndrangar trail, we found several pieces of what were either for an outdoor fitness stop or a very strange playground. They were all in some state of disrepair. But they did have a very nice backdrop of pounding waves against lava shorelines. The day started very rainy and stayed mostly gray. At the extremely popular Reynisfjara, another black sand beach, we escaped the crowds by going a 1/3 mile or so up the beach and didn't have to share the sand, rocky shore, and, waves hitting rocks, or sea stack with anyone. The fog is obscuring the view of the sea stack.

Photographing waves is one of my favourite things, especially when there's some soft afternoon light and they're splashing around near the shore so elegantly.

A relatively quiet day: breakfast, followed by a short drive out to Dyrhólaey to see the ocean, the Dyrhólaey arch, and the Reynisdrangar, whose other side we saw from Víkurfjara a few days ago. Then into Vík for lattes and some very light shopping, then back to the hotel for dinner and rest.

It was amazing. 🖤 Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach, in Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland, where the sand and all the rocks are formed from volcanic rock. The whole thing is just unrelievedly black, unless you count the patches of snow further in from the tide. I loved it.

From Feb 2024, the sea stacks at Vikurfjara Black Sands Beach, Vik, Iceland. Taming those waves to this degree required a 20 second exposure.
