Cloudiness works against us at both stages. In detection - optical and thermal channels work worse, visual support by mobile groups is practically impossible. In defeat - limited work of aviation and interceptors, mobile groups actually work by sound.

Even in pitch black, you'd still see a color. It's called eigengrau, caused by thermal noise in your rod cells basically causing them to flip bits and signal the presence of light.
You're seeing this visual noise right now, but the signal is so high you barely notice.

Here's what I know for sure: anyone telling you that there is any technology today that can autonomously positively identify a camouflaged (visual, thermal, etc) target maneuvering under cover and concealment is 100% lying to you.

Both would impart enough thermal energy to the air along the path of the beam to be visible even if the beam wavelength itself is not visible (and if the beam wavelength IS in the visual spectrum, it's so bright it instantly and permanently blinds anyone nearby without eye protection)

There was a party of four Crossbill calling and roving around forestry to the NE of Llyn Llech Owain today, occasionally showing well but never close enough for photos. Lots of Siskins too plus we picked up a Firecrest calling. No visual though even with the thermal. #birdingWales #UKBirding
