After seeing so much interesting #dataViz work being done by meteorologists and climate scientists, I'm thinking about organizing a conference about climate visualization. I wonder whether this would be something interesting to a broad audience or just to me.
My monthly #Arctic temperature graphics have just been updated through October 2024, which observed near record high temperatures. I'll have more on this particularly anomalous month soon.

DAY 2 of Visualising Climate 2026 was another inspiring one! ✨

The MEDIA stream explored how to make climate stories relatable, connecting global data to local realities. Visual literacy isn’t universal: what works for one audience may be a closed door to another.

Four hacks for making scientific data click, by @bananafish.bsky.social:

1. Strip away complex language
2. Strip away scales and units unless needed
3. Use relative comparisons
4. Let readers experience the data

Great point made by Samira Hamza at #VisualisingClimate2026:
with melting glaciers and struggling polar bears as icons of climate change, people in the global south feel climate change is something far away, and not their problem
She advocates for localising messages about climate change

1. Identify the question, go for a chart that answers it
2. Make your takeaway the title of the chart
