I’ve always pronounced it as “voetsek”, but yeah, “voertsek” is a bit old-fashioned. It’s not as drastic as the difference between a “laslappie” (a type of quilt) and a “loslappie” (which I daren’t explain)

You forgot two words on your list I love: “dronkverdriet” and “babelaas”, lol.

"Voetsek" would also work, except... This is usually aimed at dogs to chase them away. Shortened from "voort sê ek" which is "go forth says I". Means go away. Shortened to tsek which is more aimed at a person.

I grew up with "ja", "eish", "ag shame", "lekker", "voetsek", "doos", "fokkof" and all the other wonderfully expressive bits of South African English that say in one word what standard English needs three polite little sentences to manage.

So I’m using them more.

I still love the word voetsek...

Do you not think that many in SA had/have dogs more as a "voetsek, stay off my property" reason than being kept as pets? Admittedly, it's been over a decade since I was last in SA, and obviously, if you're in a gated community, you don't need dogs for protection. I'm genuinely curious, btw. 😊
