The first thing I ever searched the internet for was the word "bagels." It was in 1994, I was in school in North Carolina, and I used Webcrawler. Over 600 hits for bagels. I was in awe that there were 600 results from around this so-called "world wide web." I printed a bagel coupon.

Backend website guy told me once that they had a client build in alerts to their CDN to tell them if any executives pages started getting a ton of hits suddenly, so that they’d know some bad shit was breaking about them. Often a false alarm, glitchy WebCrawler or whatever, but not always.

back in the 90s i learned in high school how to write a search prompt. i learned about boolean operators, which have some other practical applications, but were immediately useful for finding good results on lycos or webcrawler. remember webcrawler? of course not.
