Despite its incredible cosmic weirdness about gender, I actually think the series was in some ways progressive for epic high fantasy of its era. It featured lesbian and bisexual characters without too much leering and a positive, heroic depiction of polyamory. It called imperialism an explicit evil.

imo the Khazars are legitimately fascinating and tell us a lot about the weirdness of commerce, settled peoples, and pastoralists on the steppe eleven centuries ago
