We're chuffed to bits to see this 'monumental propagation effort' increase the population of the extremely rare Catacol whitebeam (not found anywhere else in the world). Well done @n-t-s.bsky.social & In Vitro Microplants. www.heraldscotland.com/news/2659402...

Ooh @sibthorpia.bsky.social is very brave taking on Whitebeams, a notoriously tricky group!
But no need to worry: a new edition of the definitive #BSBIHandbook on Whitebeams is at the printers right now & a pre-publication offer is available to #BSBImembers.

Whitebeams, 'microspecies', or 'full' species, several the population is tens or low hundreds of individual plants. True Service-tree (Sorbus domestica) Porthkerry, we were able to confirm statistically that the 14 ramets that were sampled are very likely to belong to only one genet. A rare tree.
🌳 Britain's rarest native timber tree might surprise you! The true native Black Poplar, Populus nigra, has only ~7,000 wild specimens left – and just ~600 are female.

Learn to identify this and other poplars with Russell Miller on 8 Dec.

Two Welsh endemic trees on the limestone in Breconshire - Welsh whitebeam (Sobus cambrensis) and lesser whitebeam (Sorbus minima) - particularly smitten with minima. #Sorbus #whitebeams

Two similar endemic whitebeams. On the left is Round-leaved Whitebeam, on the right is Twin Cliffs Whitebeam.

Described in 2009, the Twin Cliffs Whitebeam was named Sorbus eminentoides, which means, basically, 'looks like Round-leaved Whitebeam' - whose scientific name is Sorbus eminens.

The Least Whitebeam, Sorbus minima, is in my humble and biased opinion, one of our best looking whitebeams. Small, adorable leaves with those deep lobes reflecting Rowan ancestry. This endemic tree has a very restricted range, but is abundant within it with over 700 trees known.

Two endemic Welsh whitebeams, both with Rowan ancestry.

Top is Ley's Whitebeam, Sorbus leyana, which has 9 remaining wild trees. Plant Atlas: share.google/INMlwgNZvgI7...

Bottom is Least Whitebeam, Sorbus minima, which has a wild population of over 700. Plant Atlas: share.google/E4VQ14l0PvKL...

A meeting with interesting trees at @northwaleswt.bsky.social Nantporth NR.

Saw some of the World's 30 Menai Whitebeams (Aria arvonicola) this week, a Critically Endangered plant, nearly all of which are at risk from rising sea levels. Two are lost each year - this may be next...

I managed to squeeze in Slender Whitebeam, Menai Strait Whitebeam, and the three whitebeams of Arran. Unfortunately there simply wasn't space to include the other twenty Sorbus I saw and drafted chapters on - not without it becoming a book just about whitebeams!

I realise that I've seen a lot of whitebeams this year; this is the endemic Llangollen Whitebeam, Sorbus cuneifolia. The world population is a little over 300 trees, all in Wales. The most important thing I learnt was that I should never, ever try to pronounce 'Llangollen' without prior coaching.

This year I've finally bitten the bullet and begun looking at whitebeams. Earlier this week it was the turn of the Menai Strait Whitebeam (Sorbus arvonicola) - easily separated from Sorbus aria at the same site by the grey leaf undersides (comparison in the last photo). @bsbibotany.bsky.social

This afternoon, I dedicated two trees to be planted in Glen Rosa to help after the devastating fire.
If you can donate or help with replanting, the amount would be appreciated and / or some of your time would help the planting teams.
Thank you.
