See an excerpt from Mayim Bialik below. ​​The plinking, grinding, churning that begins this piece is a sound from my earliest memory: a toy that is rotated again and again to create its song. It’s a sound from an era where parents did their best and we didn’t know what better could even look like. This is a short song; less than 2 minutes of what feels to me like separation and dissociation and passion. The words “forever” and “never” feel the same to me here. “Losing one’s taste for home” keeps me returning again and again for punches in the face and in the gut which forever remind us of another time. See an excerpt from Andy Kaulkin below. Neko Case embodies a sense of timelessness in her music. Music that is also original, inventive and highly personal. The first thing you hear is that voice: a majestic contralto, stylized and instantly recognizable, but also filled with humanity (from anger to vulnerability to triumph....it’s all there!). Next, you notice her unique compositions, often drawing from mid-20th century pop and country and then twisted into mini operas that keep you on the edge of your seat. Finally, there are her much celebrated lyrics. She has her own language of metaphors and observations that can be illuminating, hilarious and discomforting, sometimes all at once. It’s all in service to her singular, passionate worldview.
