The alert, which warned against activities that could spark fires, including fireworks, was issued as a severe risk of wildfires across the UK. Despite this, the stadium’s five-night concert series continued with a large pyrotechnic display accompanying The Weeknd’s performance of 'Moth To A Flame'. Critics, including social media users, questioned the decision, with one user sarcastically remarking that the organisers had not received the alert. A Wembley representative defended the event, stating that all pyrotechnics were conducted under strict safety protocols and that specialists managed the display. The government’s alert did not ban fireworks, though it temporarily restricted disposable barbecues. The incident highlights tensions between public safety measures and large-scale entertainment events, with similar alerts causing unexpected reactions at festivals like Boomtown. The One Show’s 20th anniversary special, broadcast on Friday evening, was interrupted when the government’s emergency alert system sent a nationwide wildfire warning to mobile phones across England and Wales at 7pm. Hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp were clearly caught unawares as phones in the studio began ringing simultaneously. Jones initially mistook the noise for a fire alarm, remarking that the timing could not have been invented and attempting to keep a straight face while continuing the programme. Kemp later clarified on air that the sound had been the official wildfire alert. The message warned of a very high national risk of wildfires and urged residents, landowners and visitors not to light disposable barbecues, fire pits, garden incinerators or fireworks, noting that even a small flame could rapidly escalate into a major blaze endangering lives, homes and emergency services. The alert represented the largest use of the system since its introduction in 2023. It followed severe wildfires, including a major blaze near Stourbridge that destroyed 19 homes, damaged a further 18, spread across 500 acres and injured several people including firefighters. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed the alert had been requested by Fire and Rescue Services after he visited the affected area. Despite the unexpected interruption, the anniversary programme continued, featuring guests including Christine Lampard, Matt Baker and Tom Grennan reflecting on two decades of the show. The government has also called in military support and restricted disposable barbecues amid ongoing heatwave conditions.
