Budget 2026 makes big promises but keeps cutting the workers who would deliver them. You can’t build a strong Canada without strong public services.

This is so incredibly stupid. Carney waived fees for parks, encouraging people to use them. And is cutting the employees needed to actually maintain them, for visitors and for nature. It's infuriating.

Parks Canada to reduce warden detachments across national parks amid budget cuts
Parks Canada is planning to close at least 13 warden detachments across several provinces and territories, including British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. The decision, part of a $145 million budget cut over three years, will impact at least a dozen positions, with some detachments like Banff and Jasper each losing one warden. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has expressed concerns about the potential safety risks for staff and the effectiveness of the new regional enforcement model. Parks Canada spokesperson Meaghan Bradley stated the agency is modernizing its law enforcement approach by redistributing resources to focus on high-priority areas and adopting an intelligence-driven strategy. However, former warden Mike Henderson warned that consolidating services could lead to staff burnout, as wardens would be required to cover larger areas with fewer personnel. The union has raised questions about increased response times, longer travel distances, and the lack of immediate backup in remote locations. Parks Canada's executive director of conservation, Tamaini Snaith, presented the changes in a virtual meeting with wardens, noting that some affected staff may be offered roles in the new regional enforcement areas. The agency's law enforcement program, which has an annual budget of approximately $10 million, has faced challenges in keeping pace with expanding park responsibilities and new national park additions. PSAC emphasizes that Parks Canada has a responsibility to protect national parks for future generations, and workforce reductions should not compromise safety or service quality. The changes have drawn criticism from union representatives who argue that the cuts prioritize financial savings over operational effectiveness and staff well-being.
