Here are a couple shots of a #Backlit #Willet. I think this is a Prairie Willet, but I have to admit that I’d never heard of a “Willet split” until just now. The life of a mediocre birder is an exciting thing.
Regarding the light, it’s more of a side-light, but sue me 😊

any other U.S. birders trying to focus on work stuff (to avoid contemplating the election) but having to shout down the intrusive voice in your head yelling "you should sort out all your non-breeding Willet photos instead"

The list goes on & on. I have been birding for 40 yrs; a willet will always be a willet. 😂 Wilson Townsend Anna’s ……. Holy bleep. Ridgway’s rail should have stayed light footed clapper rail. Don’t get me started. For me conservation is much more important than the name of a bird.

Prairie Willet & Saltmarsh Willet are now two distinct species of birds. I always kinda liked the romantic thought of Willets nesting on the Alkali prairie wetlands having a kindship with those on nesting in the brackish wetlands of the SE. Alas no more. #birds

ebird just took away one of my lifers because I saw a willet on the Jersey Shore in July 2025, and now they've split the willet into two species and how am I supposed to know which one it was? I DID NOT KNOW THEY COULD DO THIS TO ME 😡 🪶

in my house Willets are known as Tiny Willet because there was a player on the local junior hockey team whose last name was Willet; he was listed at 5’8” but was much closer to 5’6” at most. he was our favorite player. whenever Willets come up in Wingspan my wife and i shout TINY WILLET!
