#working-class-plumber
You'd think Reform would be delighted that a white, working class plumber got elected and they beat the metropolitan elite university lecturer.

In order to understand UK politics in 2026 you must realise that a plumber & plasterer doesn't represent the interests of the working class because she is left-wing but a wealthy broadcaster & former academic does represent the interests of the working class because he is right-wing. Hope this helps
a less affluent suburb of manchester just elected a plumber & those who insist we listen to the working class are furious

turns out it doesn't count if you're pro-trans & pro-immigration

the majority of the working class in the US is female, and the US working class is disproportionately members of minoritized groups and immigrants

it’s not Joe the Plumber (who was neither Joe nor a plumber)

You must understand:

Lily, who works doing data analysis for the University of Bristol and lives in a house share is middle class.

Brian, her landlord, who is a self employed plumber declaring around a third of his income is working class.
This is just an incredibly verbose paraphrase of "lanyard class", isn't it?

Left - Green candidate 💚

Hannah Spencer, working class plumber and greater Manchester through and through.

(Far) Right - Reform UK candidate 🟣

Racist anti-academic from St Albans.

Your choice Gorton & Denton

So these foreign islamists voted for a white working class English female plumber.

Want a definition of fighting elitism: a working class plumber beating an ivory tower academic who has his own TV show on a channel owned by a billionaire

Just take a second to think how Labour would talk about being beaten by a plumber from a working class background in Bolton if they were a man.
Since I saw the phrase “Everything is gender” I have become convinced that everything is indeed gender
Good analysis by Ben, my only addition is that I think psychologically Labour cannot accept that their median voter is closer to Hannah Spencer: still young, well off but still renting, female, and socially liberal than it is their desired median voter: Lee Anderson, and that is because of misogyny.

How could a middle class plumber possibly be more working class than me, the heir to an humble baronet? ~ Venison Grouse-Partridge for the Telegraph

Facebook commenters just can't except that someone who works as a plumber can be leftwing.

The contempt that shows for working class people is staggering.

What is the working class? Many invoke it in this election, but no one defines it. How much is it economic, when a plumber can make 10x as much as adjunct professor? How much is it cultural/an identity, or the kind of labor? Why so many 1930s white-guy versions when so many are women and BIPOC?

A plumber who left school at 16 means the left behind white working class are unrepresented.
The palest woman you’ve ever seen in your life wins a by-election.

This is anti-white voting.

in the discourse around the Green by-election candidate being a plumber, you can really see how much ‘working class’ in a UK context just means ‘racist’ like 90% of the time

You can be a Doctor or a Lawyer and be Working Class.

And you can be a builder or a plumber and NOT be Working Class.

Platner? Really? And another thing: can a guy not put on a jacket? My “working class” plumber shows up looking more professional — and without nazi tattoos — than this. See Fetterman.

This kind of stuff isn’t going to work when the new Green MP is a white working class plumber.

"so a local plumber came out of nowhere to win a working class seat in the north of england?"

yep, flipped a massive, historic lab majority

"man, this dude must be the most bigoted mf alive"

actually . . .

Curiously working class people prefer to vote for a local plumber than a parachuted in millionaire from a party of washed up former Conservatives
March 3, 2026 at 5:28 PM
Vote Green today in Gorton and Denton.

Let’s have a working class woman representing a community that’s been forgotten by consecutive Labour and Conservative governments.

Good luck to our favourite plumber - Hannah Spencer.

there's this idea that the way we need to appeal to the working class is by valorizing working class as an identity and that just cannot possibly work. status is zero sum, you are not going to create a world where "plumber" is the noblest profession
August 18, 2026 at 9:39 PM
In the Gorton & Denton by-election, the quintessentially middle-class Green Party has Hannah Spencer, who left school at 16 to become a plumber, as its candidate, while Reform UK, voice of the disaffected working-class, is represented by Matt Goodwin, a former academic turned far-right TV presenter.
