I learned this exercise from a fellow teacher at Insight Timer, and I’ve since shared it with wayward writers, leadership students who are trying to figure out what they want to do in the world, and friends who are decent people at a loss.

I'm official working class (min wage plus my payrises, service industry)

My WIP characters apart are all hard workers (sometimes overworkers) doing it for a living, the start is guys in the pub, and my prose is every day, nothing flowery

Here's the fun thing about Celtic paganism. If you're cool enough you become a god. I explore this in my short story Grave Curiosity in which a local hero has become the guardian deity of a town.

Borias smiled at Theron, then Theron looked away, blushing. "By the stars... He's beautiful. " Theron said softly. "He is, isn't he?" Vette replied. Theron put a hand over his face, embarrassed. "Blast it.. did I say that out loud?" Trisha smiled smugly. "We heard you, loud and clear. What's the matter Agent Shan..are the ladies not good enough for you?" Theron's tanned cheeks flushed. "I um..." He grumbled. "I mean...It's none of our business. " Risha looked at Borias fondly, he blue eyes never leaving Theron, watching him intently. "Good luck with that one Vette. He seems like he's trouble to me." Borias continued staring, stroking the stem of the glass suggestively. Theron had never seen such an attractive man. He had been attracted to men before, but this one seemed different somehow. Master Zho had taught him that all living things are connected to the force, and even though he wasn't force sensitive, he could still feel how powerful Borias was. Try as he might, he couldn't seem to break eye contact with him. It was as if he was being controlled. Or perhaps there was more to it than that. Vette noticed Borias staring and jumped in front of Theron, blocking Borias view. "Oh no you don't.." She glanced at Theron. "Sorry. He Does this all the time. He's a terrible flirt. That isn't flirting, Theron thought. He felt uneasy finally, and looked away. " I really should be going. I have a meeting to get to on Carrick station." He looked at Vette, trying to avoid Borias gaze. " it was nice to meet you. I hope he isn't too much trouble. Good luck." "Thanks." When I was a kid I had a dream that was almost the complete opposite of this. That dream was not the inspiration for this passage.

That night Sophia had a dream. She was on the playground. She could hear the voices of her classmates from far away, but there was no one else on the playground. She realized the voices were coming from above her and she looked up. Above her she saw her classmates. They all had beautiful wings and were flying. They weren’t as graceful as birds, but they were clearly enjoying themselves. It looked like fun to Sophia and she wanted so much to fly too. Sophia looked where her arms should be and noticed she had wings, too, but they looked nothing like the wings the other children had. She thought they might even be broken. She didn’t know if she even could use them to fly like her classmates. Sophia thought that maybe she was like a penguin and her wings were useful for something, just not flying. That didn’t make her feel any better because the only thing she wanted to do at that moment was to fly. Sophia looked up again. No one was looking down. Sophia wasn’t sure if the other kids didn’t know she was on the ground or just didn’t care. Sophia reached out with her wings and moved them up and down. She loved the feel of the air rushing against them. She flapped as hard as she could… and nothing. Sophia was determined, so she tried again. When that failed she tried everything she could think of: running, jumping, even diving so that her wings would be facing forward instead of up. Nothing worked. Sophia was tired and she felt hurt, but she thought she could try one more time. She put everything she had learned together and jumped at just the right moment… and she didn’t feel like she was falling. She looked down and her eyes were very close to the ground. She tried as hard as she could to stop herself from thinking about how pathetic she must look to her classmates. Then Sophia woke up. She was so disappointed she didn’t get to find out if she would learn how to fly and she didn’t get to feel what flying was like. She told herself it was just a dream. She was still disappointed.

I said back, “You do know I'm a middle school student on Planet Earth, right? The biggest adventure I have is finding out what the assignment in English class is going to be. Sure, I can travel to any memory I want to, but none of my memories are on other worlds or of great moments in history.” She mumbled that I was right and looked at the floor. After a moment she said, “I know you're going to go back again tonight, aren't you?” I nodded. She went on, “I just wish I could go with you. I wonder if we could time travel together somehow. That would be awesome!” I told her, ”A few loops ago I would have thought that was impossible, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe if we hold hands or something when I jump.” “Let's try it!” She said, and she reached towards me. I grabbed her hand, remembered a time, and jumped. The next thing I remembered was being woken by my phone ringing. It was Zephyr. She said, “It worked! Look at the date. It's last August! THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME! I'm coming right over.” I've time traveled enough that my body was saying a visit to the past wasn't worth getting up early for, but I slapped on some clothes and headed downstairs so that I'd be ready when she came to the door. When she arrived she said hi to my mom, and rushed towards my room. I followed her.
