For helping them develop their reading practice, I've found that it helps a lot to give them more choice about what they read. So students will do a major writing project about a subject that they choose and part of the project will be finding sources/models to work with.

As a community college writing prof, I have to assume that many of my students need to build up to taking on college-level reading. If they're not there yet, that's normal, and basically that's my job.
This has different implications depending on the kind of reading that we're talking about.

Can I just say as a former Harry Potter Adult (derogatory) that Harry Potter does in fact suck when you look at the story objectively, the writing is bad (though still think JK isn't smart enough to do the subtle racism she's accused of doing), and other stories tell the same message but much better

that said, this is one of the reasons why writing black villains is so difficult, most parts of our culture have been wrongly prosecuted as a signs of evil or degeneracy for decades and centuries and navigating those stereotypes takes both intentional historical research and personal experience

Lwa is genuinely enjoyable and I love it. I need a second season myself but what we got its still nice.
I wouldn't give it a masterpiece status but it doesn't need super good writing to be enjoyable. Lwa is mostly vibes and I love it like that
