I missed my monthly "don't buy a resin printer" meeting with @jumperless.org because I was hand-soldering a 3×2mm WS2811 IC to a flex PCB. If you want a Neopixel with colors other than RGB, turns out you can just make your own by having a long enough manic episode.

Baseado no design do meu tridente, só de bateria esse costeiro dela tem uns 500g, some a isso que cada um desses fios contém um trecho de fita led do tipo ws2811+microcontrolador+elemento pra dar estrutura dos LEDs e eu digo que uma sambista experiente estaria penando, quanto mais essa daí.

Technical Retrospective on Controlling Addressable Christmas Lights
The video from the *Computerphile* channel presents a technical retrospective on controlling addressable Christmas lights, comparing a 2014 solution (Raspberry Pi with individual wiring) to a modern approach using addressable LEDs (WS2811). The current system relies on three wires (5V power, ground, and a single data wire) to control up to 2000 LEDs in series. Each LED reads the first 24 bits (encoding RGB in hexadecimal) to define its color, then transmits the subsequent bits to the next LED. The transmission uses a serial protocol with time modulation: a "0" is encoded by a short high pulse (0.5 µs) followed by a long low pulse (2 µs), and a "1" by a long high pulse (1.2 µs) and a short low pulse (1.3 µs). A prolonged low pulse (>50 µs) resets all LEDs. Brightness is adjusted via *Pulse Width Modulation* (PWM). In case of an LED failure, the chain is interrupted, similar to traditional light strings.

I share my failed projects too. I thought a WS2811 LED driver with PWM could drive many vibration motors in series, but found the PWM signal isn't rail-to-rail and unsuitable for this purpose. It's more of an 18.5mA constant current circuit with PWM reducing the current to 0mA.

The WS2811 is not working as expected. It is not simply a PWM controlled open drain output. I think it expects a real LED with a forward voltage for the constant current circuit to work properly. It probably meana a few evenings of experimenting.

Got the idea of driving small vibration motors in a long string using WS2811 LED drivers. It is EMI robust because the signal is push-pull and regenerated at each node. The motor is driven using a PWM controlled mosfet. Another mosfet brakes the motor.

controller i built for my bedroom lighting. I added an external relay to switch power to the strip when it's not lit. This saves 21w from just powering the ws2811 ic embedded on every LED.
