I am in Utah, surrounded by so much rich texture! I’ve taken hundreds of photos, but I’m here celebrating my birthday and haven’t had time to look through them, so this is all I have for now. I might try to slip in a couple more for the Blue Sky Art Show “Texture” theme when I have some downtime later!

Yant Flat (Candy Cliffs), Utah
I’m looking through my photos from the past week and came across this one. This place was wild! I never made it to The Wave, didn’t win the lottery, but I’m glad I found the Yant Flats Trail on AllTrails. I was pretty much the only one there… I passed a couple other people along the trail, but had this whole landscape to myself.

If you’ve ever tried and failed to get permits to The Wave in Coyote Buttes North in Arizona, Yant Flat is a pretty cool alternative in Utah. It’s a similar red rock landscape.

When basalt cools the resulting contraction can create hexagonal weathering. Navajo Sandstone can also show hexagonal weathering; but, it is caused by expansion of the rock as it decompresses when exposed.

Hexagonal weathering in Navajo Sandstone. Caused as the rock is exhumed by erosion. Since it lithified a depth under higher pressure the lower depth/exposure causes the rock to expand slightly.
