Finished by rererereading of Snow Country by YasunariKawabata, tr Edward G Siedensticker. I don't do enough rereading but could see the benfits here - I was able to pay more attention to Kawabata's skill with action beats, peripheral detail, drama (more heightened than I remember), and mood.

I don't usually read forewords and such, but this book has a very informative intro. I hope I don't die before I get to read all the books I bought :)

The tea bowls, three or four hundred years old, were sound and healthy, and they called up no morbid thoughts. Life seemed to stretch taut over them, however, in a way that was almost sensual.

Cosmic time is the same for everyone, but human time differs with each person. Time flows in the same way for all human beings; every human being flows through time in a different way.

MY VERDICT:
A haunting minimalist meditation on flawed relationships and generational wounds, creating a uniquely Japanese melancholy.
