In a new study published Oct. 23 in Cell, researchers at YSM found that the amino acid #taurine is key to the way the innate #immune system senses danger signals. Even more, boosting taurine levels may diminish the effects of #inflammaging.

New Yale initiative explores the role of inflammation in disease
Yale School of Medicine (YSM) was awarded a $10 million grant from the Blavatnik Family Foundation (BFF) to launch a new research initiative in the field of inflammation science. This gift advances a key institutional priority for YSM, enabling its scientists to explore the role of inflammation in human health and disease. It will also fund graduate and postdoctoral fellowships. We are grateful for the Blavatnik Family Foundation's vision and generosity. Inflammation underlies nearly every disease we face today, and unraveling mechanisms of inflammation in health and disease can transform medicine for generations to come. This grant focuses on the fundamental mechanism(s) of immune development in health and disease." Nancy J. Brown, MD, the Jean and David W. Wallace Dean of Yale School of Medicine The grant will be dedicated to understanding the fundamental principles that govern inflammation. Inflammatory diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly damages healthy tissue, leading to chronic inflammation that can affect almost any organ or system in the body. Inflammation is now understood to be a factor in nearly every major human illness, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. An estimated 23.5...

A YSM study suggests that future #glioma treatments may need to be type-specific, rather than generic, says Roel Verhaak, PhD, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery at YSM and senior author of the study.

A new study from the Dragoi lab (@georgedragoi.bsky.social) shows that rest is an active part of learning: hippocampal ripple activity helps the brain rapidly reorganize new information and supports insight-like learning. 🧠

A YSM team has identified patterns of brain activity associated with insight-like, at-rest learning in a recent study published in Nature Communications.

A YSM study published in @molecularomics.bsky.social suggests that the pre-existing molecular state of a PDAC cell exerts greater influence over how a KRAS mutation behaves than the identity of the mutation itself. This challenges previous assumptions. medicine.yale.edu/publication-...
How Cell State Shapes KRAS Mutation Effects in Pancreatic Cancer
This study shows that in pancreatic cancer cells, a cell's baseline state—not which KRAS mutation it carries—drives its molecular behavior.
