The recently discovered backstage photographs of David Bowie, captured by his official photographer Mick Rock during the UK leg of the Ziggy Stardust tour in 1973, offer a rare glimpse into the iconic musician's private moments. Taken on May 25, 1973, at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens, these images depict Bowie resting in his dressing room between two sold-out performances. The venue, now lost to time, was a significant location during the final months of the Ziggy Stardust era, which culminated in Bowie's dramatic announcement of retiring the Ziggy persona at London's Hammersmith Odeon just weeks later. Mick Rock, renowned for his unparalleled access to Bowie during this transformative period, documented intimate moments of the artist applying makeup, preparing for performances, and taking brief respites between high-energy sets. The photographs provide historical context to a pivotal moment in Bowie's career, capturing the artist in a more relaxed state before the intense public spectacle of his stage persona. These images are particularly valuable as they were taken during a period of rapid artistic evolution, with Bowie transitioning from the Ziggy Stardust character to the more introspective Aladdin Sane persona. The discovery of these photographs offers fans and historians a unique opportunity to see Bowie in a less curated environment, away from the glare of the spotlight. The images also highlight the collaborative relationship between Bowie and Rock, who became synonymous with capturing the essence of Bowie's ever-changing artistic identity. The Bournemouth Winter Gardens, though no longer standing, was a key venue in the UK music scene during the early 1970s, hosting numerous influential performances that shaped the era's musical landscape. These photographs serve as a tangible connection to a time when Bowie was redefining rock music and performance art, making them a significant addition to the historical record of 1970s music culture.
