Good article. At this point I am sadly priced out of just about everything but very small local shows like zinefests and tiny art markets/events. (PPZF is coming up in October!)

I’ve seen this at zinefests lately. There’s always that one table like this any the only zine for sell if something they farted out an hour before getting there

since I am more illustration based than comics I always try to do like a half/quarter of my usual setup when I'm at more comic centric events/zinefests . And making my table at least 50% of is zines/comics.

A few zinefests I've applied to have a "your booth must be 80% (ish) zines" rule, and I think that's an elegant solution that more comic shows should implement.

💀 yes this is my problem with some zinefests, this model does not make it accessible to new people with limited time who want to make something. if you dont even know whether or not you're going to get into a fair you're probably not gonna draw a whole comic beforehand

Add to that I haven't brought myself to zine much. Turns out I might not manage to get out to zinefests much at all with hubs working most weekends and kofi sales haven't kept me in supplies for printable.

I'm probably not doing any more zinefests until summer which means I have lots of time to work on new zines. "Clothes shopping/fabric selection guide geared toward neurodivergents", "how to jailbreak your kindle", and another 4-pack of Littlest Red Books will be priorities I think

Been hoping to see how the Manga Ichiba event in May turns out re: doujin turnout. I'm excited for it, but it being a part of a larger established con (and thus pay walled) means less people coming casually to check work out (which I'm more used to for indie/zinefests)

I agree that Mixam has taken the wind out of the sails of the DIY RPG zine. Even as someone who loves beautiful design work & talks about it at length, Ill never stop having a soft spot for xeroxed/looseleaf RPG notes.
It's why Ive gone to so many zinefests lately & bought so much lo-fi stuff.

kuplii was so great, zinefests are the best for the connections you can get with another human thru sharing yr work with someone face to face, you cant beat this feeling, ever... im gonna be offering my zines online too, hopefully next month! my mastectomy funds saving process feels hopeful

Kind of weird to me when people act like indie zinefests and doujinshi stuff are either EXACTLY THE SAME or COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SPECIES there is significant overlap in function and principles, and also the expectations/etc is different lol
