Corals aren’t the only animals that bleach. 🪸🐠🦑

Many sea anemones also host microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. When environmental stress disrupts that relationship, anemones can lose their algae and turn pale or white—much like corals.

The knobby candelabrum, a type of coral, relies on tiny algae called zooxanthellae living in its tissue for energy. These algae use sunlight to photosynthesize, providing nutrients for the coral.

The algae are zooxanthellae, the same kind corals use. They live inside the clam's tissue by the millions, photosynthesizing and handing over sugar. In return the clam gives them a safe, sunlit place to live and a steady supply of nutrients. Neither does as well alone. 🧪 #marinelife

Corals get their color from microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. When ocean temperatures rise too much, corals expel them, causing coral bleaching. Bleached corals can recover, but only if conditions improve.

Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, which is when corals expel the tiny algae (called zooxanthellae) living inside them. These algae provide most of the coral’s energy—and their color. Without them, corals turn white (bleached) and can die if the stress continues.

A Phyllodesmium briareum (Bergh, 1896) you would practically mistake them for the soft coral they feed on. They use the zooxanthellae from the coral.

Living things have a range of conditions they like and thrive in, but that range is not just in one dimension.
Nicely demonstrated here by this study of giant clams (Tridacna maxima) demonstrating sensitivity to both temperature and light conditions. 🧪

Coral bleaching is often in the news; it occurs when corals lose their endosymbionts due to stress.
And then what?
Some may corals recover, and then reabsorb those former symbionts. Although the viability of the symbionts rapidly declines after expulsion. 🧪🌊

Having a nice illustrated guide like this for zooxanthellae corals would have been very handy for... right about every other research expedition I was on.

I will never get over how perfect A. sola is (starburst/sunburst anemone) 😍 credit to their zooxanthellae (symbiotic dinoflagellate algae) for some of that fabulous color! & these anemones will battle genetically unrelated anemones (even other sola) that encroach upon their territory 🔪

🌱 No Stingers, Just Symbiosis
Unlike stony corals that rely on stinging cells for defense, Xenias don’t have powerful nematocysts. Instead, they thrive by rapidly growing & spreading across reef surfaces. Their polyps house symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that provide energy through photosynthesis.

Today’s coral of the day is this striking Montipora species. Corals like this get their colors from microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. They’re the ones doing the photosynthesis, producing nutrients for the coral and getting protection and a home in exchange.

Could you produce calories from your skin if you had zooxanthellae in your skin? Is there any place to look up how many calories those produce per amount of surface area?
