I am suing the NIH.

As part of a class action with the ACLU and 16 other plaintiffs, we are challenging the thousands of unlawful grant terminations in an effort to get them all reinstated.

Whatever happens, at the very least, no one can say I sat back and watched while they destroyed science.

Short thread:

18 months ago, as part of their assault on higher ed, Trump/DOGE/Vought terminated my friend Kelton Minor's NIH Director's award that would have allowed him to take a faculty position there.

Without the funds, Columbia ultimately rescinded the position.

Kelton moved to Denmark.
There are days in life that shake you.

I’m shattered 💔 to share that I just found out that the US Government terminated my 2024 NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (~$2 million), threatening my long-promised assistant professor job at Columbia University

At a recent grant-writing webinar with @qedscience.bsky.social , someone asked: "What if I just get a bad reviewer?"

Yes, you might. But there's never just one reviewer, and there's more worth saying 🧵

A scientist who just lost her grant cuts straight to the heart of it: “Requiring that NIH only fund work leading directly to a drug or other biomedical intervention… would rule out much basic research funded by the agency.”

It’s pathetic & harmful to limit our understanding of health like this

Kudos to @science.org for this self-analysis of the peer review process. These kind of data are never shared and don't have to be. Wildly refreshing to see it out in the open. Editorial and peer review dynamics at elite general science journals | Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

To those of you who claim "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", I'd like to counter with "...or weaker, or not meaningfully different, depending on the context", despite it making the conclusions more suitable for a specialized journal.

Scores like @qedscience.bsky.social the 1% are one answer. That being said, when the top 1% still skews to big, well-funded teams the model never saw, are we ranking quality or resources?
