“GOTTA LEARN AI OR BE LEFT BEHIND.” Good. Fuck off! Leave me behind! Enjoy your artbarf rapture, your janky Temu future. I’ll be back here looking at real birds and writing weird, also real, books.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:

Never sell anyone out.

In fact, if you're asked about banning 12-year-olds from softball, just say, "You're asking me to sell out kids for my political career. I'm not going to do that. Let's stop demonizing people in tougher circumstances than you or I will ever experience. They have guts."

Data point on what's possible
This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Don’t believe people who tell you ai can be liberatory or any other misappropriation of movement talk or justice frameworks.

Find some people who are preparing to rebuild and cast your lot with them.

Then read a bit more. Just keep your wits about you because they are trying to run game.

I guess that the best argument, for me, against AI is that everyone advocating it seems to be a psychopath.

I get really annoyed seeing so many people say "Since everyone uses AI to write papers..." or "Referee reports now are just written by AI..."

Look: Everything I have written has, for better or worse, been my own writing. Don't project your cynical expectations on my work.

Seriously, screw gen-AI.

This rules.
Siskel and Ebert fighting about the Kids in the Hall movie is absolutely stunningly amazing. Siskel liked it a lot. Ebert truly looks like he is going to murder his cohost.

“Will you watch the picture again?”
“Yeah I’d be glad to, Gene. Maybe sometime in the 21st century.”

as a hater let me acknowledge something ai is good at: producing irritating discourse at scale

this is usually because, like "ai" itself, people are talking about different things like they are one thing

so let me disentangle, with statements numbered for easy disagreement

Conservatives desperately want cultural supremacy and yet they are incapable of producing art. I don't even mean great or good art, I mean "works that are arguably artistic." Every cultural artifact they produce in any medium is instantly recognizable as vapid, disposable, and unworthy of attention.
Also, he purged the Kennedy Center of a collection of African art that was given in tribute to JFK, but he installed this, from the Tony Montana Meets Saddam Hussein Collection.

It continues to amaze me that the industry/culture that so demonizes cultural theory and humanities are its greatest purveyors. Naming machine learning “artificial intelligence” is gramsci level politics. yet when we call that naming what it is, suddenly it doesn’t matter what you call it.
