I get it on 4th and 4. 4th and 8 is nuts to me
I think it's less about mahomes and "clutch" and more that going for the field goal there is playing not to lose and not playing to win.

The problem with kicking on 4-8 is that you concede any chance to win the game. You are never getting that ball back even *if* you stop Kansas City from getting the 2 first downs they needed to get in FG range. The only good outcome for you is a tie.
