A really excellent gathering of information on the medieval wall paintings of Pickering church

I'd very much like to do a trip to Pickering - to see the church and the castle would be an excellent day trip

There's a faint moon here to the side of Lincoln Cathedral's west front as the late afternoon soon was getting ready to set - the Cathedral looked excellent as well inside after darkness had fallen and an organ festival by Jeffrey Makinson had played out

At today's visit to Gamston's Heritage Open Day, I found out about nearby Rockley (north Nottinghamshire) which didn't exist as a recognised place until the early 1800s. Prior to that, it was regarded as outlying land of nearby West Drayton.

This will provide much interest as to which families these many daughters will have had and the various different lives they each lived out

another example of medieval brick-making :)
Finding good materials for building has always been a challenge.

Luckily for us in 1358 we had a Carmelite Friary across the road who also made bricks.

20,000 of the little beauties were bought from the Friars for £6. 🧡

I visited Tattershall Castle today and now have 3 different guidebooks - it's like having guided tours from 3 different people. Each time I visit, I get to delve a bit deeper into coming ever more alive in my mind - I also got to ponder the Tattershall deer park and chase whilst there

I was out at Gringley's Beacon Hill (north Notts) looking to understand where the boundaries of the medieval royal park there may have been - did the east edge follow the parish boundary? or may that edge have been a field or two further east into the Walkeringham parish?

labouring life examined in a specific rural 1600s community sounds really quite interesting

I’ve been saving up all of the book tokens my generous family have given me since Christmas, and I finally took myself down to @chepstowbooks.bsky.social to pick up a copy of Steve Hindle’s latest magnificent tome. Very excited to get stuck into it.

today's question I'm pondering - was there a family connection between the de Lisors (de Lizours etc) families of north Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire ?
I know the Notts part quite well, the Northants-based(?) family of that name I know not so well

sharing the knowledge of an interesting resource for comparing county and town maps c.1610 kind of time
A set of county and some town maps like these can be found in: 'The Counties of Britain: A Tudor Atlas', John Speed, Alasdair (Hawkyard Pavilion, 1995).
The book is going for very reasonable prices online.
Most maps are available online, but for those wanting to compare the maps - the book is good

I've been wondering, if social media algorithms deliberately favoured more-positive, constructive and compassionate trends - would we start to see society begin to reflect these in how they see the world to at least some extent ?

another quotepost - this one on the latest Tattershall Castle guidebook of 2025 from the National Trust and with plenty of input from buildings archaeologist James Wright - I'll have to get myself out to Tattershall again soon

I shall be catching James Wright for a talk he's doing at the Bosworth Medieval Festival > Sun 23 Aug 2026 that'll be
Only 2 months until The Buildings Archaeologist is released!

It's tricky to get word out online these days so a reshare would be hugely appreciated 🙂

I've been wondering about how The Anarchy (1100s) may have affected/played out within the north & midlands. Does anyone know of a good book/resource that I may not know about? I've read a good general book on the anarchy, but a book on Ranulph, Earl of Chester or the Battle of Lincoln would be good
