#OnePlaceStudies and disappearing online resources...
Updating "resources elsewhere" pages on my two Scottish one-place study websites to change ScotlandsPlaces link to go to ScotlandsPeople now (for digitised tax records and Ordnance Survey Name Books). And sad about other things I have to remove due to link rot. Fantastic resources, now totally gone.

It's early, but I'm tagging this for #OnePlaceWednesday anyway.

#Suffolk and surrounding areas please note. #OnePlaceStudies
#AncestryHour Has anyone else had the displeasure of working with this newly added record set on Ancestry? Suffolk, England, Bishops' Transcripts, 1560-1853. It is by far the worst indexing job I've seen from Ancestry and raises concerns for future digitization projects #genealogy #FamilyHistory

Just ordered a copy of The Gardens of the British Working Class Paperback by Margaret Willes from Oxfam. Really looking forward to spending a few winter evenings reading it with the promise of spring around the corner.

I’ve long been wanting to create an interactive map showing the owners/occupiers & descriptions of properties from the #Sudbourne 1910 Valuation Act field books. This week I gave it a try. Lots more to add, but I’m happy with the result - & it’s free!

You know you're a genealogist when researching one ancestor turns into accidentally becoming a local historian for an entire township. #Genealogy

#AncestryHour This video by Crista Cowan has some tips on how to evaluate the index of an Ancestry database before you begin searching in it. She's addressing the number of entries which are missing names but the technique might also reveal problems with place.

It’s not just #OnePlaceStudies people the iLands AIs are targeting...
Following a growing number of unsolicited AI-related emails asking me to help train AI models to do research and masquerade as popular historians I now have a bot asking to work for me for money. Hard to see how AI can ever be ethical from a historical research perspective, let alone wider issues. 🗃️

Yep, been there, seen that! I found an Ancestry tree showing a resident of my Waters Upton #OnePlaceStudy dying in 1795 aged 16, then getting wed though dead over a century later!

Speaking as No.2 on this list (Historians) our field is, overall, being affected negatively by AI. Everyone who researches the past needs to be very careful about allowing this pseudo-thinking into our lives and work. #Skystorians #FamilyHistory #LocalHistory #OnePlaceStudies 🗃️

The Internet Archive is such an under-used resource; it provides access to so many publications which are useful for #FamilyHistory, #LocalHistory and #OnePlaceStudies.
Some exciting things there! The Phillimore Atlas is superb. A reminder to all that it is available free here: archive.org/details/phil...
