Getting to have this conversation with JJ was a treasure. Seldom do I get to talk about disability like this. JJ was so thoughtful and generous that we talked for another hour after the recorder was off.
This morning I learned that JJ passed away shortly after we talked. I'm grateful we met.

Awards like these also remind us to be hungry—for creators to still admire and celebrate their peers, but to keep striving the entire time. I hope this year’s ballot has also reminded those who didn’t nominate to read voraciously and discover something new, especially if poetry is also new to you.
