As sociopolitical crises of the past decade have made increasingly salient, cognitive-behavioral frameworks that are well-suited to treating pathology located within the individual are not always well-suited to support work with clients whose distress is proportionate to the real environmental challenges they experience. This Special Issue of Cognitive & Behavioral Practice focuses on the concept of "environmental pathology," which we use here to refer to social, cultural, political, and/or environmental circumstances within which significant distress or impairment are normative and proportionate responses. Examples include chronic exposure to discrimination such as racism, misogyny, or transphobia; realistic medical health risks such as pandemics; insufficient access to healthcare, food, or housing; military violence; or realistic threat or We are especially interested in manuscripts that describe the principled extension of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral principles to work with clients whose clinically significant distress or impairment could be reasonably described as healthy, normal, or appropriate to their meso- or macro-systemic context. We also welcome articles focused on community-level interventions designed to prevent or reduce contextual barriers to mental health and wellbeing. C&BP is a practitioner- oriented journal that publishes narrative and systematic reviews, research reports that include rich clinical descriptions, case series and studies, clinical commentaries, and treatment development reports. As such, articles should emphasize material likely to be informative to clinical practice and supervision, such as detailed case descriptions, excerpts from psychotherapy transcripts, and Example topics include: 1. Ethical obligations, dilemmas, and responsibilities to consider when navigating environmental pathology in clinical practice 2. Theoretical frameworks or suggested best practices for leveraging evidence-based principles in the context of environmental pathology, particularly for concerns or contexts that are not adequately addressed within the existing empirical literature. 3. Global perspectives, such as considerations when translating evidence-based practices between cultures and/or working with displaced clients or refugees. 4. Empirical studies, meta-analyses, or intensive case series designs investigating the efficacy of novel or established interventions for clients presenting with distress or impairment associated with one or more forms of environmental pathology 5. Primers, introductory papers, or case studies offering cognitive-behavioral translations of practices from diverse theoretical orientations, cultures, or epistemologies, supported by an appropriately critical review of relevant literatures 6. Case studies, theoretical frameworks, or literature reviews evaluating diverse practices for navigating discussions of politically-charged or taboo topics in assessment, therapy, or clinical research 7. Strengths-based approaches, including empirical studies or literature reviews on topics such as resilience, critical consciousness, neurodiversity, or post-traumatic

Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. 10.1146/annurev-clinpsy-061225-045608 Behavioral addictions have been recognized in various forms for centuries, yet only three—Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder, and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder—are currently included in formal diagnostic systems. In the past decade, research on these conditions has expanded dramatically in both volume and methodological rigor, drawing on longitudinal, neurobiological, and cross-cultural designs and evolving into a truly global science. Even so, the field remains beset by unresolved controversies. Chief among these is a persistent tendency to import substance use disorder concepts—tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence—that lack conceptual and empirical support when applied to behavior. Related challenges concern the over-pathologizing of normal engagement and a reliance on confirmatory, self-report measurement of uncertain validity. We argue that advancing the field requires sustained funding, theory grounded in the disorders themselves, objective and intensive-longitudinal methods, greater diversity, and public health and regulatory attention to increasingly technological environments.
