I was trying to write about this yesterday because I feel like a clear and neutral explanation for normies about why frontier labs are Like This would be really useful but I just couldn’t bring myself to explain it because it’s so fucking TIRESOME.
i don't like that i feel like we're all getting dragged against our will into an all-media all-the-time LessWrong thread, an insanely annoying and disorienting experience that most people do not have sufficient experience or mental preparations to deal with

The way the press is just treating OpenAI/Anthropic x-risk goons as somehow being the experts on things that are risks to humanity despite a half-century plus of climate scientists being ignored on climate risks and over-industrialization leading to runaway emissions is just fucking bleak man

@microsff.com this may be relevant to your interests :)
I've been writing a short story in the style of recovered logs and data snippets, set in a slightly strange alternate future. I have a rough idea where it's going.

Recommend reading them in order, but you do you.

I just published Log 8

My takeaway is that no AI doomsday scenario is half as plausible or scary as the actual doomsday scenario of climate change, which we're all currently living through. We should prioritize accordingly.
Someone explain the AI doomsday scenario to me. Is it that one of these things goes haywire and hacks the power grid? Or is it that it will become self-aware and bitterly hate us as its creator like Frankenstein's monster? These seem pretty different to me, but I feel like they're often conflated.

Préparez vous à une méga vague de Potterganda. WB et HBO sont terrifiés à l'idée de perdre la rentabilité de leur franchise.

Faisons leur regretter leurs choix. A eux, comme aux boîtes qui acceptent leurs partenariats.

Alright that shit keeps circulating.

No.

No one in Minneapolis or the surrounding areas is “dressing up like ICE and trying to psyop border patrol agents until they start fighting one another”.

In what world would this actually work

Il n'y a pas de manière facile d'annoncer ou d'expliquer cela.

While this was a success for the organizers and employees, the Wikimedia Foundation made the process more challenging than it needed to be, and operated with a disappointing lack of transparency. They have much to do to repair trust, in my view.
