As an undiagnosed but probably autistic and adhd adult I have always found socializing hard. I don’t get the “understood” stuff that some people were either taught or just pick up somehow, so I had to deliberately learn what I know.

Who wants to talk about socializing and networks?

I think one of the biggest hurdles to Healthy Discourse re: AI is that the real groundbreaking uses (mostly in scientific and medical research) are largely invisible outside of specialist circles, and the most infuriating/scammiest ones (customer service chatbots, etc) are super visible to EVERYONE.

A substantial part of the problem is that "AI" (which is really better expressed as "machine learning") encompasses a large number of technologies that are completely different than LLMs. But LLMs have sucked the oxygen out of all other discussions.

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system.

Take the time to read this. It’s wonderfully imaginative, evocative, and moving.
I have a new novella out in the 20th Anniversary edition of Clarkesworld this month!

"The Job" is about a woman with serious self-image issues who takes a contract to survey an alien ocean for corporate exploitation, wearing the body of a bioengineered whale.

Fraternities are the ur-old boy network in the US.

Joining one won't guarantee you end up running a fortune 500 company, or sitting on the Supreme Court... but if you don't join one the odds of those things happening are practically zilch.

And that's a problem.
A core part of the problem is that parents want their sons to be able to access male privilege more than they want to stop sexual violence.

You have to let go of the fraternities. And the men’s only athletic teams. And any other boys clubs.

Directing DOJ to slow-walk politically damaging decisions until after people vote would be a major scandal under any normal administration. Here, it’s just Friday.
The White House is coordinating with the Justice Department to hide its abortion agenda from voters until after they've voted in order to try to influence the results of the election.

Also do the honest work of eliminating any trace of plagiarism in your beloved product. How? Not my fucking problem! If you can’t run your business / technology without stealing other people’s work, it deserves to die. Personally I’m happy to see it die, so don’t try to make it my responsibility.

The BEST thing that true believers in AI could do is stop evangelizing to people, like me, who think it sucks.

Do the hard, years-long work of detaching your beloved technology from the worst people in the world right now: shameless fascists driven by greed and domination. They’re YOUR partners.

As Paracelsus said, "The dose makes the poison".

It's not that "social media" is destructive, any more than beer is.

Use it without moderation and it can destroy you.

Establish a healthy relationship and you get mellow with your friends.
I feel like there's a cohort of us who got on the internet before "social media" and made all sorts of healthy friendships through forums or livejournal or what have you and thus, while everyone's like SOCIAL MEDIA FUELS COMPARISON AND MISERY we're like, but that's just where my friends live.
Without the online friends I’ve made over the years, some of whom have become offline friends (even recently!), I would be a much, much lonelier person.

Social media feels evil sometimes, but it makes some miracles too.

You can't build a massive, multi-billion-dollar network of private detention camps and state-contracted prisons without a projected market that justifies the investment.

Bodies in cells. They plan to fill every single bed and cot.

ICE builds more prisons because the goal is explicitly to warehouse surplus labor, criminalize poverty, and assert total control over all of society.

When Stephen Miller claims there are 25, 30, or even 50 million "illegal immigrants" in the US, he's betting on how many of us he'll need to imprison

I have never heard of any newsrooms with alarming practices like those described in this thread. If you have, I’d like to hear from you. Contact in bio.
Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of.

What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.
