Criminologist, community type, recovering ex politician, ex postie and former academic. Salford council estate boy, now stooging around in Staffordshire and beyond. Hello.

Every new story about what’s happening in Universities, and every conversation with a former colleague leaves me even more convinced that I did the right thing walking away from academic criminology so I could focus full time on being a maverick crime fighter who doesn’t play by the rules.

Just in case anyone thought that UK universities were deep in trouble, remember that science, research and university life as we've known it are in all in immediate peril in the US. The age of the Anglosohere university's dominance is likely coming to an end. www.science.org/content/arti...

This pretty much hits the nail on the head.
When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”
To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."

Sobering, accurate and timely read. The days when the impacts of austerity were mitigated & partly hidden by the capacity built up previously are well and truly gone. Everything’s falling apart in many parts of the country. It’s almost like now is not the time for yet another round of austerity?

As a kid, adults all seemed so smart and so wise. As an adult who writes instruction manuals, I have to include warnings like:

*Don't jump off a moving forklift.

*Don't drink the motor oil.

*The blowtorch gets really hot so try not to lick it.

I’m keeping one foot in academia by continuing to supervise several Doctoral students. It’s brilliant to continue to engage with people with fresh ideas, new concepts and different ways of looking at problems and solutions. All this talent needs to be drawn on, but will it?

If you’re able to buy a book from them, this would go such a long way to help support them rebuild in the aftermath.
