Why is the climate changing? Fossil fuels are the biggest contributor, but we also have invisible ghosts of like 2 billion hectares of cleared forests hanging out up in the sky, so we can all eat

(Land-use change is responsible for about 1/4-1/3 of total cumulative CO2 emissions since 1750)
"Over the past 10,000 years, the human quest for food has been the largest driver of land use change, negatively affecting stored carbon and biodiversity through conversion of natural ecosystems into production areas."
The world is facing a global land squeeze as food, feed, fiber and fuel demand rises. How to manage it? 🧪

- PRODUCE more food and fiber sustainably on existing working lands
- PROTECT remaining natural ecosystems
- REDUCE waste and growth in demand for land-intensive goods
- RESTORE degraded lands

The year is 2048. Travel guides to the US note the abundance of hulking gas cars, a global oddity. "Renting one is an experience, but not cheap"
"Well this is awkward". The US used to to make 95% of international cars. Now about 18% and falling. ICE cars are low tech, high pollution & too expensive to buy & run. US makes 5% of EVs. China makes 75%. Oops. #Time4ChangeUSA #TheTankIsEmpty #2026MidTerms ⚖️ 🇺🇸

Insane new research. Scientists gave asthma patients free electric stoves to replace their gas stoves, then checked to see if symptoms improved.

Not only did symptoms improve, ditching gas was *better than medicine.*

NEW: Big Oil and Gas created the myth that natural gas is "clean" — despite knowing the health and climate harms of methane decades earlier than previously reported.

A major CCI investigation exposes how the gas industry deceived the public and policymakers into believing gas is a climate solution.

Incredible chart from @propublica.org. If you don’t follow enviro stuff closely, your instinct might be that the hold-your-nose solution (carbon capture from fossil fuels) would be the “pragmatic” one versus covering Earth in solar panels, which seems utopian. In fact it’s the opposite

I thought I'd get maybe 25 replies to this request and use two or three of them. We're now at 1400. The column, which is 4600 words long (blame yourselves), is finished, but this thread should be studied by future historians. No era has ever been as utterly annoyed, as molecularly fed up, as we are
I'm working on a column about the tech annoyances that drive us crazy, and I want it to be as universal as possible, so tell me yours!

E.g. scanning a QR code to read a menu, never receiving the one-time passcode they supposedly texted you, "verify you're human" by IDing tiny motorcycles, etc.

I saw Rollins play at Royce Hall my freshman year at UCLA, in 2007. Even then the sax seemed too heavy for him as he came out hunched over, but as soon as he started playing he set the house ablaze. What a legend. RIP.
