89% of SBE NSF grants were never awarded!! My field (Cognitive Neuroscience) is included in this gutting, as are so many others. Plenty of horror stories in the same space are also coming from NIH. It’s not just delaying research; it’s labs shutting down and a next gen that won’t be trained.
The fiscal year is over.

The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years.

We should build a statue of this woman.
This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now.

He got away, and they never relocated him.

Biology? Computer science.
Physics? Computer science.
Economics? Computer science.

Computer Science? Actually, Sociology.

A political social network has latched on to a handful of politically active academics whose views are the vast minority in their field, who keep making wrong predictions and denying verifiable facts, but retain a large following.

NEW: @apnews.com confirms that ICE has begun electronically "disappearing" people in the agency's custody who have final orders of removal.

As of last week, anyone jailed by ICE with a final order of removal will NOT appear in the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, making them effectively vanish.

A decade ago, I made a decision about my daughter’s education that I hoped would challenge New York City’s separate and unequal school system. Now 16, she thinks I made the wrong choice.

Hi, I didn't wanna make this video but I need to come clean about something. This whole time I've been a p-zombie with no phenomenal experience or interiority. I've been getting messages asking whether there's anything it's like to be me, and the answer is no. I'd say I'm sorry, but, well, you know.

One of the biggest intellectual vices in progressive politics/nonprofit world is constantly trying to shut down legitimate debates by insisting your preferred outcome is what "the community" (an ontologically good thing with undefined boundaries and homogeneous interests) wants.

My NSF Highly Competitive grant (broadly, on biomaterials mechanics) was rejected on Saturday night. I've never had an HC rejected before. Most NSF panels (20+ grants) have at most 1 or 2 HC (sometimes 0). This is my second likely-fundable NSF rejection this year. The funding cuts HURT.
Well folks, finally got a grant rated “Outstanding” at USDA NIFA.

A wee explainer on why the NIH hiding impact scores and percentages from peer review of grants:

1. Spend 6 months writing proposal
2. Submit to NIH
3. Peers review it, give it a score, and it’s ranked by percentile—the lower, the better
4. If you’re in the 1st percentile you can expect funds
