As someone who grew up reading and devouring Piers Anthony books, I would never ever recommend that to young people today.

It's 30+ years later and there are still people mystified about this. I love me some Heinlein, said the guy who won the Heinlein Award a couple years back, and also, I wouldn't be recommending him as a way to get people into the genre in 2026. He's in the "historical perspective" tier now.
There comes a point in one's life when you have to admit that what that was fresh and new when you were young is no longer fresh and new and you aren't young either.
I went to a panel at a convention in the late 90s where people were mystified that The Kids weren't reading 40-yo Heinlein novels.
