Researchers @oxfordchemistry.bsky.social and @kavlioxford.bsky.social how that phospholipid transfer proteins are not redundant: each prefers different acyl chains, while tissue-specific expression and phosphorylation help fine-tune membrane composition
Differential lipid selectivity of StARD phospholipid transporters revealed by native MS - Nature Communications
Lipid transfer proteins organize intracellular lipid distribution. Here, the authors show that seemingly redundant phospholipid transfer proteins have distinct acyl chain preferences, and suggest that their tissue-specific expression levels and phosphorylation fine-tune membrane composition.

1/ The toolkit behind the discovery is out.
In @natcomms.nature.com, we report the selective NUDT5 degrader toolkit that helped uncover NUDT5’s hidden biology - and show antagonistic roles for NUDT5 and NUDT15 in 6-TG response. doi.org/10.1038/s414...
Targeted Protein Degradation of NUDT5 Dissociates Catalytic Inhibition from Protein Loss in 6-Thioguanine Response - Nature Communications
Thiopurines are widely used drugs whose activity depends on cellular metabolism. Here, the authors develop chemical tools to remove NUDT5 and show that protein loss, but not inhibition, alters drug re...

Curious about how drugs are designed?

Check out this seminar for non-scientists by Chris Tate, Group Leader in the LMB’s Structural Studies Division. He covers how drugs work and how researchers are working to design drugs better, faster and with fewer side effects.
