Astonishing! He begins to name the books, to reassure himself that they are all still there, exactly, as he remembers. He’s an Alim, the highest level of Islamic scholar, he has, very likely, memorized *every* word in each text, and knows the order they’re placed.

This reminds me of a special we watched in World Lit I about Mali and how residents near to where the great universities in Timbuktu once stood actually have many of the books/texts that were used hundreds of years ago squirreled away in their homes. Even if they cannot read them, they treasure them

A fight we’d never thought needed to be waged. During this post Age of Enlightenment era, some hoped humanity would focus on the next phases of intellectual, social, scientific and technological development. Didn’t know so many really try to prevent that from happening. Usually for short $$$ gains.

To amplify this, about half of my siblings are really cavity-prone and half are not (I got my first filling in my 40s; one of my brothers had baby teeth that erupted with signs of decay!) We were raised together, same diets, same teachings about tooth-brushing, just luck of the draw.

There will always be a way poor people “could have handled that better.”
My point is this: you don’t know. Maybe there was. Maybe there truly wasn’t. The truth is very likely somewhere in between.
None of that changes obligation to people who are suffering now.

I don’t think many nondisabled people realize that laws mandating accommodations are purposefully weak. Your employer gets to decide what an “undue burden” is. They hardly ever get called to account anyway, but if they do, they can cry about money or work hours or pretty much anything they like.
Heh, some work training I recently had to do REALLY wanted to remind people that the ADA: AA means no workplace discrimination, unless the accomodations are a burden to the employer. Left unsaid, is that the employer decides what's a burden, and the employer now has an excuse to discriminate.
