This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Once met a man who was pinned down by enemy fire for days during Battle of the Bulge and he still carried a card on which he'd written ideas for aesthetics and military branding.

No he didn't, it was an old black+white photo of his commanding officer that he still carried in his wallet.

Notable that this could be especially problematic for children with disabilities. Assets can disqualify you for critical social welfare benefits-including SSI and Medicaid.
Just on normative grounds, it is bad, bad, bad not to give people opt-out options of any government automation process. The point is to change the default, not to compel participation.

Meanwhile, artists sit up, sniff the air hopefully, ears twitching, wondering if this alliance comes with funding.

There's a lot of...intensity...at the moment.

That's likely to continue building over the next month.

Don't forget to let yourself be a silly goose.

Don't forget to pause and make eye contact and smile at pharmacy workers, cashiers, nurses, old ladies, coaches, and drive-thru workers.

I'll admit this knock-on effect of the diesel disaster - people who help those who can't afford food now can't afford to deliver the food - had not occurred to me until I saw this excellent @macfarlanenews.bsky.social piece.
Holy shirtfork. We're in some deep circle of Dante's Inferno here, folks.
MacFarlane: The Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio has got the same issue. Last year, they paid $50,000 for diesel to transport their food. Now, they’re paying $150,000 for the diesel to transport their food.

No.

You could be under surveillance all the time, or, you know.

Unionize.

Believe it or not, workers have rights, whether or not those are respected and acknowledged.

And no, Reid, your "AI twin" is not you and people better not be paying you to see RoboReid.

Well I just was freed from Bluesky Jail after my acct was abruptly taken down.

Only after I emailed a second time, concerned I'd been hacked, was it restored.

I'm here in the history booth of Bluesky, not following 300,000, no generic anon bio.

Now wondering if it was due to an automated tool 🤷‍♀️

You don't have to believe in the soul to grapple w/complexity of consciousness.

"This assumption that consciousness is a form of computation...that...is a very dangerous assumption. The more you look at a brain, the more you realize how different it is from a computer." - Neurosci Dr. Anil Seth...
This is what a lot of people are getting stuck on. They don’t want to admit they believe in magic souls, but they also don’t want to admit AI is thinking or understanding in any way, so they pretend there’s some sophisticated middle ground that lets them hold both views.

But what is it?
I haven’t been paying super close attention to all the Stancil fighting, but aren’t there plenty of views consistent with physicalism on which it’s incorrect to attribute understanding to an LLM?

As a reminder, Pavel neatly summarized the matter.

Valuation boosting strategy.

If The Public startles you by hating your data centers and slop,

and adoption isn't what you projected,

talk about how urgently threatening and powerful your product is, because you sank...a lot...of cash into this.
