New paper on functional trait space of arthropods along elevation with some interesting patterns 🐜🦗🪲🦋 ⛰️
🦋🏔️ New article: How do arthropod traits shift with elevation?

Across four groups in Italy's Vinschgau Valley, orthopterans and butterflies lose trait diversity higher up, while ants gain it. 🐜

🎙️🐦 How does passive acoustic monitoring compare with traditional bird surveys? Across the Alps, PAM detected ~2× as many species—but varied across habitats. Our study explores how the two approaches differ and complement each other.

How Passive Acoustic and Traditional Monitoring Estimate Bird Diversity Across Habitats
We compared traditional bird counts (PC) with passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) in a heterogeneous Alpine landscape. PAM recorded twice as many species, with a strong correlation between species rich...

Our new Nature Eco Evo paper documents range shifts in 1,758 butterfly species across 105 countries, primarily due to climate change.

🦋80% expanded
🦋27% contracted
🦋22% shifted elevation
🦋342 showed multiple shift types.

Two weeks ago, we had our MonitAnt workshop with all project partners in the beautiful Bavarian Forest National Park. We even managed a short field trip, where everyone enjoyed being surrounded by wood ants and their myrmecophiles (see picture). 😉

Evidence for climate-mediated range expansion of hybrid wood ants
Climate change challenges many species. To persist, species can shift ranges, respond plastically, and adapt. Yet, these responses require variation - often limited in natural populations. While hybri...

One mother for two species via obligate cross-species cloning in ants - Nature
In a case of obligate cross-species cloning, female ants of Messor ibericus need to clone males of Messor structor to obtain sperm for producing the worker caste, resulting in males from the same mother having distinct genomes and morphologies.
