I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us.

And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

Obviously The Wire is the best TV show of the century.

It's always my answer when someone asks: what's the Great American Novel?

This is the niche post written exactly for me.

it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports

Government policy based on the "pet peeve" of a reality TV guy.

Tomorrow our in-service week starts and it is one of the days I miss Texas the most... There will be no breakfast tacos.

A Texas in-service almost always starts with breakfast tacos.

There was a concerted right wing attack on transgender rights, which leaked emails show, and which the Times will not report. But sure. It's "organic."
Yet another op-ed in prestige media pretending racism, sexism and transphobia among Republicans is a response to Democratic overreach

It’s impossible to overstate how openly Islamophobic many GOP voters I know have become. They are convinced that Mamdani and El-Sayed are posing as progressives to get in office and impose “Sharia law.” It’s completely unhinged but they view their fear as “rational” and “common sense.”
"This campaign is the latest expression of the right’s eagerness to reject American pluralism — and their faith that the majority of voters share that goal and will respond to appeals to bigotry."

This whole thread.
“Silly” is a good way to put it! There were excesses in 2020 but they were mostly low-stakes efforts by well-intentioned people to address real injustices.

The excesses of the right during the same era were far more harmful. The reckoning we need now is about how elites lost sight of that.
Being more serious re the Atlantic piece, I do actually wonder what people who went in for the sillier aspects of Woke 1 now think of it all?

I've been watching some former conservatives I know get radicalized by the Bad Place to an extreme level - they now think that there is a huge threat that Islamists will take over the country, that Mamdani is an existential threat to the US, and that the DSA will turn us all into commies

I taught in this area of Houston for many years; it is home to some of the most welcoming, hardest-working folks I’ve ever met. My heart breaks for this community.

A few simple ideas here for how we can improve literacy outcomes - it's not just about money, but spending money in the right ways so that students and schools can thrive.
The Second Lady is under the impression that stilted Youtube videos of uncharismatic jerks reading books to kids will solve our country's literacy crisis. Let's have some SOR peeps tell her what really make address declining literacy. #SOR

2/3 of the way through a Wheel of Time re-watch, and if Jeff Bezos is worried that people don't like him, he could spend a huge amount of his money to continue the series with the original cast. While he's at it, fund the Buffy reboot.

Weird. I lived in one of America’s most diverse cities for 17 years and felt joy and amazement at being surrounded by terrific neighbors. Maybe Sohrab is doing it wrong.
Sohrab is turning that big dial that says racism.

Sanctuary cities are not "harboring illegal immigrants." They are making their cities safer, because when residents are afraid law enforcement will report them to ICE, they are less likely to report crimes.
Banks: "It's a great idea, blocking int'l flights into sanctuary cities harboring illegal immigrants. Send those international flights to red state cities and the country will be safer and better off for it. I think Sec. Mullin is on to something here. This is a good idea to punish those cities."

Had someone argue with me today that a) the Chinese Exclusion Act wasn't racist; and b) America wasn't a country in the 100+ years when we didn't restrict immigration.

Boy, white supremacy is a real head trip.

OK, but I live 40 minutes from Idaho and what works in Idaho absolutely would not work on the coasts... unless the coasts are down for creating a Christian nationalist separatist state.
