Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.
🚨Update: Our analysis of global APC expenditure has now been expanded to cover more publishers (7 -> 14) and more years (2019-2025).

We estimate $15B in APCs paid over seven years, $3.7B in 2025 alone. Elsevier crosses the $1B threshold by itself in 2025.

In life, #echidnas' hindfeet point backwards: they can flex to scratch between their shoulders, and do jazzhands with all 4 feet to drill vertically into the soil to hide. But taxidermists twist them forward so the skin rips

That would be the highest summer tide on record by nearly 4 inches and among the 20 highest tides since 1897.

To see how important US science is, consider measurements of changes in ocean heat content. US data are ~53% of the total. Over half!

But removing the US data is worse than randomly removing 80% of the total data, because unlike other countries, the US makes measurements everywhere. 🧪🌊
