There are much smarter people on here talking about the economics and labor dynamics of orchestras, and I will only add:

we must subsidize orchestras more

(as part of a new, holistic, and robust approach to art making in America)

Many other industries are only sustainable thanks to subsidies

I keep discovering this and promptly forgetting it 😅
Did anyone know that doing work when you’ve gotten rest and have working brain cells is way better than trying to work when you’re exhausted and your brain is so fried you can’t think? I might be the first person to ever discover this

I love getting comments like this on my youtube. I'm so glad I started doing Obsidian/Zotero/Academic videos in addition to the music theory videos I was doing before. I had no idea how many people I would help!

You ever think, what I want isn't to be a successful author. That would be cool, but no. What I want is a UBI that lets me write full-time. I'd be unstoppable.

survivors are also frequently encouraged to "speak out" and "start conversations" in order to "change the world" but we receive nothing but harrassment, suspicion, and hate for doing so. i grieve so often for the girl i was during MeToo who truly believed that things were soon to get better.

THREAD OF EMINEM LYRICS THAT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING TAYLOR SWIFT WOULD WRITE

"Your anxiety's throwing gang signs"
"Even my cheap shots are overpriced"
"I lay awake and I strap myself into bed with a bulletproof vest on"
"You critics come to pay me a visit? Misery loves company, please stay a minute"

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

In high school, my teachers taught us to investigate source material. Where information came from, who was telling it, who they were telling it to. Not all information is created equal.

Anyway, it took me a while to realize that level of analysis, fundamental in my life, is not widely taught.

It's 2026. Why are all of these horrific things still happening to women?! It feels so unreal that it's still happening so much. Genuinely, anywhere you go, it's happening

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Overheard at the gym:
"This is what the news is actually like. Breaking news, scientists discover that the glass is actually half empty. Nature is heiling, not healing"

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.
I don't want to make civic arguments about history. I don't want to make instrumentalist arguments about history. I want engineers to understand my discipline is rigorous too and if not I want to be able to make fun of them forever because no historian ever built a bridge that broke in the wind.

Hear me out: sometimes it’s nice to learn about something just because … it’s fun and interesting! College is not supposed to be about optimizing yourself for A Career with no detours. It’s supposed to be an opportunity to learn and grow *as a human being* — much of which happens outside your major.

Art is never about the destination and "pretty picture good", it is and always has been about the process itself. If you don't enjoy the process of physically picking up a tool and doing it, then you are not an artist. You're shallow and lack critical thinking.
