When a Midwesterner signs an email with “cordially,” you know it’s bad.

On the list of things that make me think “ew”: “cashmere and rain” scent. Cashmere fiber is made from goat, and the yarnie in me can’t get over the idea that what unprocessed animal fibers smell like aren’t a selling point for branding shampoo scents. Wet goats stink.

As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.

I was not thrilled when I realized that my CV is still largely in Chicago A-D, and all of my other third year review materials are in APA-7. Whoops.

Spouse: we should take the kids to a civil war reenactment so they can see what it is
Me: 1) this sounds like the most “white people” thing to do, and 2) only if we go wearing Star Trek uniforms.

Things I talk to my #MLIS students about:
*my salary (as an adjunct & as a librarian)
*my student loans (how much I owe & the PSLF process)
*vocational awe (RIP Fobazi)
*Melvil's legacy & why it matters
*the job hunt (I show them my academic interview day schedules & they're horrified).

I've been sitting on this for a while, but I was awarded an IMLS grant last year. Since it's on the banner for my school's website, I guess I might as well announce it here...

<software redacted> company responded to me. We’ll see how this goes…

<software redacted> with an academic license gives me a "license expired" notice, and the online platform asks me to purchase access. I assume my license is expired, so I reapply. The response? "You already have a license." No, apparently I do not. And I'm in the middle of the semester /

I was asked for a 250 word author bio. I am not writing that much about myself; they got about 75.

MapQuest is NOT forcing AI down your throat like Big Tech. Our directions are like grandma's recipes. They've worked for decades and nobody’s asking a robot to optimize her mac & cheese.

Ring is a wildly dangerous company. Always has been. But it has sort of flown under the radar the last couple years as it tried to soften its image. Make no mistake that this is an extremely dangerous surveillance dragnet:

With Ring, American Consumers Built a Surveillance Dragnet
Ring's 'Search Party' is dystopian surveillance accelerationism.

I was asked a question today by a student that I think needs to be considered by faculty: “how do I prove I didn’t use AI?”

So I told them:
-version your documents YYYYMMDDassignment
-use Zotero for references to establish a trail of references added and used over time

Mundane break projects: sort and separate kid clothes by size that were dumped in the same bins, pull clothes and other items for donation, and keep the toddler from mixing things back in and ripping the labels off the bins again.

What deadlines?
You can tell that LotR was written by an academic because Gandalf disappears for like 20 years doing research to answer a single question.
