Last week I rented an EV for the first time, our schedule was flexible enough I knew I could make it work. Cost was about 7% more than a std car so it wasn't unreasonable. When I got to the counter they asked if I wanted a Bolt or Niro, yet when I got to the garage they had plenty of other options.

You can see IAA Transportation 2026 is in full swing. BYD debuting the ETT 44 which has a 600 km range and charges 20-80% in 20 min vs the eActros 600 at 500 km range and 20-80% at 30 min using MCS. No mention of weight or price but you'd imagine BYD price is competitive electrek.co/2026/09/14/b...

I thought it was weird to make a 2-seater since I'm almost always with my children. Guess when you don't allow children under 13 years old it fixes that issue. Odd for a person that thinks we need to have more children.

Very cool - switching from gas to electric induction cuts kitchen temperatures by 10 degrees, cuts hob cleaning times from 24mins to 21 seconds, cuts energy use by 2/3rds (a 9k saving in one pub) and yes - wok hei is still possible

Strategic Petroleum Reserve is way more complex than I thought. Apparently each drawdown shortens its lifespan due to dissolving part of the salt walls of the cavern. Wonder if I'll get to see the day we don't need this relic anymore

Heat pumps rule. I have a heat pump water heater, it's a 240V version but I leave it on heat pump only mode. It handled 7 people in the house using 3 different showers once, granted it needed a higher +130 degree set point. Been solid for 8 years now.

Sold the Tesla yesterday. The R2 has not arrived yet but there was a selling opportunity I couldn't pass up. We'll make do with one car for a bit. The whole experience made me sad for what could have been.

Another cool thing about EVs: Its inevitable that a small population of EVs will have pack failures before end of life. Same as ICE vehicles have engines that fail. But its a heckuva lot easier to swap in a salvage battery than it is to do an engine swap chargedevs.com/newswire/wre...
