this is a good point and like ... in order for the paperclips thing to happen, AI would need to be way, way, way better than it is right now
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

Everyone was convinced this guy threw a “gyroball,” a magic unhittable pitch. Didn’t exist — probably a reverse slider. He was very good (but frustrating to watch — seemed to take every at-bat to a full count) for two years, injured himself in the WBC and never really recovered
